St. Elmo - Chaffee County, is four miles west from Alpine, on Chalk Creek, and the South Park division of the Union Pacific railway. It is a mining town of great promise. Population about 500, with several general merchandise stores, hotels, smelting works, and one weekly newspaper, the Mountaineer. The sole occupation of the people is mining, there being a great many rich mines in the vicinity, all true fissure veins, the ores running in galena carrying gold, silver, copper, iron and sulfide of silver, The principal paying mines are the Murphy, Theresse C., Molly, Pioneer, and several others. The Murphy is shipping three cars of ore per day to the smelters at Alpine, which averages $30 per ton. The mine is situated away up on the side of the mountain, 2000 feet above the railroad with which it is connected by tramway, enabling the shipment of from 50 to 75 tons of ore per day. The Murphy and the Theresse C. run more in gold than in silver. Where bullion runs 175 ounces in silver, it will run 22 ounces in gold. Capitol can find here an opportunity for investment in legitimate and profitable mining, second to none in the west. Distance from Denver 153 miles; fare, $12.60; to Tincup, 15 miles; fare $3.50.
