Another friend suggested a try running a little acid over the surface. I tried soaking the tape in vinegar but that didn’t have the desired effect. Eventually I tried a wash of 31% muriatic acid, because that is what I had here, not because it was a particularly good plan. I brush on the acid, wait about 10 minutes, and rinse under water. This treatment gives the paint a little something to grab onto. With out the etching step, the paint WILL peal off.
