ROLLINGSTOCK

This page is devoted to the rolling stock I have built for my miniature version of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad. The RGS had an eclectic mix of rolling stock to say the least! There were many one-of-a-kind items that resulted from the wild imaginations of the men that tried to keep the railroad in the black. The RGS also made use of the cast off equipment of the mighty Denver and Rio Grande. I chose to model the 1941 on my layout so that I could include the many "Miller Cars" that came from the Colorado and Southern Railroad.

You will note that I am fighting the trend of "Ready-to-Run" and "Shake-the-Box" with every model I produce!

I REALLY ENJOY SCRATCH BUILDING!

You will find several kit built and factory brass models in my roster. PBL has covered the RGS and then some as far as wonderful representations of the prototype. Mary Ann, Keren, Jimmy and Bill aare some of the finest folks you'll ever have the pleasure of dealing with. Give em a ring and see why I like these folks so much.

I have also built several kit-bashed cars from bits and pieces of other manufacturers kits. The Triangle Scale Models line, now offered by Keith Wiseman, is a gold mine of wonderful castings. These kits are a great way to build confidence and to bridge over to scratch building. The instructions are so "challenging" that you may wish that you were scratch building the model. Trout Creek Engineering carries the kits from the former Tomalco line as well as their own line of interesting kits and detail castings. Last but not least, I enjoy the kits from Rio Grande Models and the guys at Cimarron Model Works.

You may notice I have a special interest in the outfit cars of the Rio Grande Southern. It is my hope to build as many of these cars as possible. I usually have more non-revenue than revenue equipment on my layout. That isn't going to help the bottom line but that's the RGS for you. The RGS outfit cars I have built are for the most part scratch built or kit-bashed models. Take a look at what I've done and I think you'll find it isn't that difficult to turn out a roster of outfit cars for your layout.

Take a look at the photo albums below. I have included photos of the prototype car where I can and then photos of my attempt to recreate the cars in miniature form. I hope you enjoy the photos and maybe I'll even succeed in inspiring you a little!
